It is shown that BTC can not only be used for colour image compression, but can also be conveniently used for image recovery based on image database content. From the compressed stream BTC (without decoding), we derive two characteristics of image content description, one called the block colour co-occurrence matrix (BCCM) and the other block pattern histogram (BPH).
Image indexing and retrieval is a very important research topic that has attracted great interest in recent years. Image coding is a successful field that has been studied for over three decades. All image coding techniques attempt to visually extract the most important features and represent them as compactly as possible. Content-based indexing of images involves the extraction of compact and discriminatory features and uses them as indexing keys. We believe that the two fields, image coding and image indexing, are closely related, especially indexing images can successfully take advantage of the results and experiences of more than 30 years of research in the field of image coding. It is shown that BTC can not only be used for colour image compression, but can also be conveniently used for image recovery based on image database content. We studied a series of individual bitmap BTC techniques for coding colour images in different color spaces. From the BTC compressed stream (without decoding), we derive two characteristics of image content description, one called Block Colour Coincurence Matrix (BCCM) and the other Block Pattern Histogram (BPH).
