A captive energy plant also called an autoproducer or embedded generation is an energy generation facility used and managed by an industrial or commercial energy user for its own energy consumption. Captive power plants can operate out of the grid or can be connected to the grid to exchange the excess generation. Captive power plants are generally used by energy-intensive industries where continuity and quality of energy supply are crucial, such as aluminum smelters, steel plants, chemical industries, etc.
