In particular the study examined interoperability and integration between systems, including a digital asset management (DAM) background with attached storage, a first-line service delivery system, the use of METS to manage delivery content, text database with search engine and a workflow management system. Over the next five years the Wellcome Library plans to transform itself into an innovative digital library, with rich and rich content available around a range of strategic topics. The first of these topics is "modern genetics and its foundations". Digitisation of content related to this topic has already begun.
The digitization strategy of the Library is very ambitious, not only on its scale - to digitize more than 30 million pages in five years - but also in its vision of how these elements will be accessed and displayed. Specifically, the goal is to create a unique repository that contains images, full text, digital files, videos, audio files and digital archive materials (an "integrated library"). This content will be presented to users through a rich and attractive interface that encompasses Web 2.0 functionality.
Currently, the Wellcome Library does not have the infrastructure needed to create an integrated digital library that provides a seamless interface between catalogues and digital collections. To advance the planning and preparation of system requirements for the digital library, a feasibility study was conducted between November 2009 and May 2010 to further analyze the key systems and determine a path towards the construction of this infrastructure .
