We investigate the effect of the phase noise form of the oscillators on the performance of the digital communication systems employing the various modulation schemes such as BPSK, QPSK, QAM and 2DPSK. The phase noise model used includes components of white phase noise, white frequency noise and flicker frequency noise. The dB penalty due to all phase noise components of the phase noise spectral form is evaluated separately. The performance degradation of the system is compared for the normalized frequency shift and the magnitude of the normalized spectrum for these modulation schemes. In addition, performance degradation is investigated with respect to the transmission rate and magnitude of the phase noise spectrum for the QPSK system.
