The Solid State Transformer (SST) is a collection of high power semiconductor components, conventional high frequency transformers and control circuits that are used to provide a high level of flexible control to power distribution networks. Add a bit of communication capability and the complete package is often called smart transformer.
The transformer has been used throughout the 20th century. So far, it has consisted of a configuration of iron or steel cores and copper / aluminum coils, with mineral oil serving as a refrigerant and dielectric medium. Inherent in this type of construction are regulation, significant weight, losses, environmental concerns and energy quality problems. For the 21st century, a new type of power electronics transformer is developed, one that can be self-regulated, without coils and that can correct power quality problems. The solid-state transformer allows additional intelligence to improve power quality compatibility between source and load. This new transformer is insensitive to harmonics, prevents harmonics from spreading (in any direction), has zero regulation, prevents load interruptions and faults affecting the primary system, can supply loads with cd compensations and does not use a liquid dielectric .
