In most cases, an intensive care ventilator is a negative pressure ventilator, in which air or gas in the air passively to the lungs, or a positive pressure ventilator, with which the air mixture or air / gas is introduced into the patient's trachea and lungs. The use of a ventilator intensive care is usually indicated when the patient's natural breathing, spontaneous, is considered insufficient to sustain life.
