Oil dilution in diesel engine
INTRODUCTION
Presence of raw fuel in an engine oil is called as fuel oil dilution.
Excess of 3% is considered abnormal.
Engine oil:
Lubrication
Reduce friction
Dissipate heat energy
Causes of fuel dilution
Leaking injectors
Excessive idle time
Incomplete combustion
Cool operating condition
Frequent short trip
Engine modification
Causes of fuel dilution
Bad A/F ratio
Blow by
Incorrect choke setting
Overloading of engine
Over fueling
Loose seals and gaskets
Improper injector timing
Post injection
Effects of fuel dilution
Waxing-low pressure and starvation
Loss of base no
Reduce viscosity
Increased oil consumption
Dilute oil additive
Crankcase accumulation
More wear ant tear
Effects of fuel dilution
Soot formation
considered normal up to certain level
forms due reduce combustion efficiency
new emission norms and EGR amplify soot
abrasivity
polishes of protective antiwear soap
deposition of soot reduce engine reliability
Impact of biodiesel blend
Pathway to energy diversity
Derived from vegetable oil, animal fat, waste cooking oil,JATROPHA oil
Contains methyl esters of fatty acid
Reduces petroleum dependence
Can reduce up to 5% in next one decade
Compatible with vehicle components
Accelerate oil dilution problem
Impact of biodiesel
It cause oil dilution due to
Higher distillation temperature
Higher boiling temperature
Acid formation due to breaking of fatty acid causes corrosion.
• Detection of oil dilution
Flash point testing
Gas chromatography-injection,separation,detection
Vi smart viscosity sensor
FTIR-fourier transform infrared
identify the spectral fingerprint of oil
D-lube
• D lube
• Engine oil is circulated continuously into a measuring chamber
• Oil dilution is detected by monitoring gamma ray signal
• View of the test bed
D-LUBE
Advantage of D-lube
Real time measurement
Short test duration
High sensitivity
No change in oil properties
Equipment is easy to install
Applicable on test rigs and on vehicle
• Importance of oil dilution analysis
Life of engine
Cost of maintenance
Emission problem
Fuel economy
Remedies
In line post injection
DPF
Remedies
• DFT 1500 hammerdown
-prevent carbon deposits around injector orifice.
-act as a surfactant, breaks down fuel into 2 microns.
Conclusion
• No oil additive to control
• Proactive maintenance
• Oil analysis
