Free Space Optics (FSO)
Free Space Photonics or Free Space Optics is a major line of sight transmission system in which modulated visible or IR beams are transmitted through the atmosphere for transmitting the data. The data transmission uses LASER. The difference from optical fiber is that instead of enclosing the beam within a glass fiber, the light is transmitted through free space. Up to 1.25Gbps of data transmission rate can be achieved using this technology. The need to buy the radio spectrum is also eliminated by this method.
The main features of FSO are:
-Line of Sight Technology: It is used in the situations where the sender and the receiver can see each other through the line of sight. It works for short ranges of up to 3 to 4 km.
-Offers Full Duplex Gigabit Ethernet Through-put: The Ethernet connections that offer gigabits per second of data rates can be implemented using this technology.
-Cost-Efficient LEDs can be used: The FSO link can be established by using the simple and cost efficient LEDs instead of costly LASERs for the case of short distance communication links.
Wiring is not required. Just the placement of the transceivers is the main procedure.
