Course Work
Scenario:
The CEO of a manufacturing company wishes to start a new manufacturing facility in the greater Manchester area.
You got a chance of CEO role of that manufacturing company. You are supposed to develop production strategy and production philosophy of this new manufacturing facility in duration of 18 months by implementing any three principles.
Task:
Your brief is to prepare a project report for the manufacturing facility, which addresses a number of key issues. The report should include the following points:
1. A description of the proposed project Statement of Work (SOW) including a statement of key objectives that the project seeks to meet.
2. A detailed planning of the project including the following Production technology and systems principles:
Manufacturing systems,
Forecasting and Inventory Management; and
Production & Resource Planning
3. Evaluating the performance of the project, roles of stakeholders and a statement of key points, which should be included in the project brief.
4. The identification of the primary risks to the effective delivery of the project and the means by which the negative impact of these risks may be minimized.
INTRODUCTION:
The word “production system” plays a dominant role in industrial engineering J. Razmi, H. Rahnejat and M.K. Khan (1998). Any of the methods used in industry to create goods and services from various resources is known as production system. All production systems, when viewed at the most abstract level, might be said to be “transformation processes”—processes that transform resources into useful goods and services. The transformation process typically uses common resources such as labour, capital (for machinery and equipment, materials, etc.), and space (land, buildings, etc.) to effect a change. Economists call these resources the “factors of production” and usually refer to them as labour, capital, and land. Production managers refer to them as the “five M’s”: men, machines, methods, materials, and money.
Statement of Work:
The first step in any push based production is to to perform the future forecasting. The process aims to ensure that the final product satisfies the customer.
The proposed project is to start a new manufacturing facility by the available funds (as it is found company is very cash rich). The location is specified that is in greater Manchester area. This production planning should determine demand, production, inventory, time horizon, Forecasting techniques and methods, MRP and MPS and to prove the selected product best suits to the push based production strategy.
IV Forecasting:
The push system pushes the resources into manufacturing based on resource planning. That is known as material resource planning. Setting up a long term production schedule which is then analyzed to a detailed production schedule for making or buying materials. This detailed schedule then pushes the operations team to manufacture the products and forward it to the next work station. The biggest weakness of this system is based upon forecasting the future customer product demand to develop the production schedule that production is based on and estimating the time to produce each part. By examining future forecasting, it gives two successful advantages.
