INTRODUCTION
The Smartphone operating system Symbian OS is produced by the software development and licensing company Symbian Ltd.Symbian Ltd was established in June 1998 and is headquartered in Southwark in the UK, and the current CEO is Nigel Clifford.
Symbian OS was designed for mobile devices, from its earliest incarnation as
EPOC32 in the Psion Series 5.
Symbian OS is a consortium formed in 1998 and owned by Psion,
Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Panasonic (Matsushita), and Siemens.
The shareholders are licensees of Symbian OS. In addition, because
Symbian OS is an open platform, any manufacturer can license it
Psion realized that there was a need for a mobile OS that could be
licensed to other manufacturers for use in their mobile products, and that
their EPOC operating system was well suited for this.
Kernel of Symbian o.s.
Symbian has a microkernel architecture, which means that the minimum necessary is within the kernel to maximise robustness, availability and responsiveness.
It contains a scheduler, memory management and device drivers, but other services like networking, telephony and filesystem
support are placed in the OS Services Layer or the Base Services Layer. The inclusion of device drivers means the kernel is not a true
microkernel.

At the time, themobile phone industry was looking for a general operating system suitablefor mobile phones and was interested in using EPOC. In June 1998, thesoftware team stepped out on their own with the EPOC operating systemand Symbian was born.
