A human microchip implant is typically an integrated RFID identification or transponder device enclosed in silicate glass and implanted in the body of a human. This type of subdermal implant usually contains a unique identification number that can be linked to information contained in an external database, such as personal identification, law enforcement, medical history, medications, allergies, and contact information.
The first experiments with an RFID implant were carried out in 1998 by British scientist Kevin Warwick. His implant was used to open doors, turn on lights, and cause verbal output inside a building. After nine days the implant was removed and has since been held at the Science Museum (London).
On March 16, 2009, British scientist Mark Gasson had an advanced glass capsule RFID device implanted surgically in his left hand. In April 2010, Gasson's team demonstrated how a computer virus could infect their implant wirelessly and then transmitted to other systems. Gasson reasoned that with the technology implanted the separation between the man and the machine can become theoretical because the technology can be perceived by the human being as part of his body. Due to this development in our understanding of what constitutes our body and its borders is credited as the first human being infected by a computer virus. He has no plans to remove his implant.
