The perception of the face is the understanding and interpretation of a person's face, particularly the human face, especially in relation to the processing of associated information in the brain. The proportions and expressions of the human face are important to identify the origin, the emotional tendencies, the qualities of the health and certain social information. From birth, faces are important in the social interaction of the individual. Perceptions of faces are very complex since the recognition of facial expressions involves extensive and diverse areas in the brain. Sometimes damaged parts of the brain can cause specific deficiencies in the understanding of faces or prosopagnosia.
The effects of photographic negation and the difficulty of recognizing line drawings suggest that representations that mediate human facial recognition are based on imaging characteristics rather than on more abstract derivative measurements of facial features. However, to understand which image-based coding scheme has more psychological plausibility, different models are required to be compared with human similarity classifications and memory performance data using the same face images.
