Parts of How Search Engines Work
There are 3 parts to a search engine:
The search engines use robots (also known as spiders) to search the internet for websites.
The results of the spiders' travels are put in an database which is then indexed based on words found and where these words were found.
The users of search engines search for words or phrases related to what they are looking for and the search engine index returns related sites.
Why Searches Fail
Empty search
Nothing on the site on that topic (scope)
Misspelling or typing mistakes
Vocabulary differences
Restrictive search choices
Software failure
What people do when they first install Google Earth
They normally search for their homes or schools by typing addresses and pressing the search button. (i.e. Campus, Staten Island, NY)
They fly to their favorite cities and explore new places. (Paris, LA )
