An intelligent system is a machine with an integrated Internet-connected computer that has the ability to collect and analyze data and communicate with other systems. Other criteria for intelligent systems include the ability to learn from experience, security, connectivity, adaptability according to current data and remote monitoring and management capabilities.
In IT, a system is defined as a collection of connected elements or components that are organized for a common purpose. As such, although devices are typically spoken of, intelligent systems include not only intelligent devices, but also interconnected collections of such devices, including networks and other types of larger systems. Similarly, intelligent systems can also include sophisticated AI-based software systems, such as chatbots, expert systems, and other types of software.
Essentially, a smart device is everything that contains a functional computer, although not usually of general use, with Internet connectivity. An embedded system can be powerful and capable of complex processing and data analysis, but usually specializes for tasks relevant to the host machine.
There are intelligent systems around us in POS terminals, digital TVs, traffic lights, smart meters, cars, digital signage and aircraft controls, among a large number of other possibilities. Integrated intelligence is an integral component of the Internet of Things (IoT) development, in which almost everything imaginable can be provided with unique identifiers and the ability to automatically transfer the data across a network without human-to-human or human-computer interaction.
