The Wave Federation Protocol (formerly the Google Wave Federation Protocol) is an open protocol, the Extensible Presence and Extension Protocol (XMPP) extension that is used in Apache Wave. It is designed for almost real-time communication between computer-supported cooperative working wave servers.
Wave is a distributed, almost real-time, rich collaboration platform that allows users to work together in a new and exciting way. Wave allows flexible modes of communication, mixing chat, email and editing collaborative documents in a transparent environment. Wave provides a lively and responsive environment that promotes more fluid and dynamic collaboration among users. The addition of Robots and Gagets allows the Wave platform to provide intelligence, integration and customization to the user experience.
