ALLAO is a computer-assisted interactive video system designed to aid lip reading and assessment for those with hearing problems. The video disk, driven by a microcomputer, shows video sequences of voice to be understood by the deaf. The interactive features of a fast-recovery, immediate-repeat, and slow-motion video disc-perfectly match the acquisition needs of lip reading. ALLAO allows test conditions (stimuli and procedures) to be accurately reproduced and, therefore, provides reliable assessments. The multiparametric evaluation allows to determine the nature of the difficulties of each subject, so that the training program can adapt to the specific needs of the subject.
Allao is a computer-based video system developed to provide lip reading instruction to adults and adolescents with hearing impairment. This system was designed to assist the speech therapist during a rehabilitation program; it does not pretend to be a substitute. Allao's system accomplishes what the therapist can not do easily or voluntarily (repeat a sentence in the same way, pronounce it slowly without modifying the original articulation, give the solution willingly in a written way). For a detailed description of the system, refer to Guilliams. The Allao system has been used regularly for three years in several experimental centers (hospitals and schools) for lip-reading and testing training. About two hundred people with hearing impairment took part in the experiment under the guidance of about 20 speech pathologists. There, the teaching method received a pedagogical and ergonomic validation. These large-scale investigations allow us to conclude that this type of computer-based video equipment is very interesting and relevant for the teaching of lip reading to the hearing impaired.
