Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) at NIIT Kaduna Center Managed by: KITREC Limited

ABSTRACT
This report covers a review of work undertaken and skills learnt during the students industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) at NIIT Kaduna center managed by: KITREC limited no. 5 station road Abakpn , Kaduna. from January 2012 to June 2012. The nature of the work include, database management (ORACLE), hardware maintenance and networking. This report covers the activates and duties carried out by the student; installing and manipulating ORACLE database, networking and sharing a database on a common network, hardware and software maintenance.
I was involved in repairs and general maintenance of computer components within the center and having being certified as an Oracle Associate ( SQL , OCA) during my stay, I was assigned the weekend class to teach SQL using slides, as part of my Industrial Training. Several softwares like ORACLE Universal Installer, Windows Server 2003 and other tools were used during my attachment at NIIT.
This report gives concise information on all the subjects mentioned, and defines the experience gained. It also highlights some problems I encountered during the process of acquiring this experience, and a few recommendations.
AIMS OF SIWES
It’s aimed at exposing student to machines and equipment, professional work methods and ways of safeguarding the work area and workers in industries and other organization. The scheme is a tripartite program involving the students, the Universities and the Industries (Employers of Labour).
OBJECTIVES OF SIWES
The main objectives of the SIWES are as follows;
• Prepare student on anticipated working situation after graduation.
• To ensure the transition from school to the world of work and enable students contact for job placement.
• To provide students an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work situation, thereby bridging the gap between University work and actual work practice.
• To expose student to work method and technique in handling equipment & machines that are not available in their institution.
• Provide avenue for students in Tertiary institution to acquire industrial skills and experience in their field of study.
COMPANY BACKGROUND
KITREC LIMITED was an initiative of few gentlemen and a lady who were interested in bringing and developing IT training centre of world class standard to the Northern part of Nigeria in March 2002.
This group of people decided to extend the availability of IT skills up North to bridge the gap and enable people that cannot afford to abroad or Lagos to study.
These people namely, Capt. Usman Mu’azu, Barbara Ekpirikpo, Saidu Jae, Abdulaziz Haladu, Aliyu Sambo, Remi Fayomi.
As the Almighty will decree, Capt. Usman Mu’azu passed away after a protracted illness before the centre could commence full operations and Mall. Aliyu Sambo joined the Network Group of MTN Communications Nigeria, While Mr. Remi Fayomi was engaged with Chanchangi Airlines Ltd. Madame Barbara Ekpirikpo and Abdulaziz Haladu were left at the Board of Kitrec before Madame Barbara eventually took off to set up her own firm.
Kitrec limited faced a lot of difficulties at the starting level due to the passing away of Capt. Usman Mu’azu and lack of commitment both Financial and Human Capital Sacrifice by the then Board Members.
Alh. Abdulaziz Haladu took over in 2003 with a lot of debt to the name of Kitrec. Abandoned but determined he alone funded the completion and eventual commencement of NIIT operations by Kitrec in Kaduna. Today Kitrec has its share-holders, Alh. Abdulaziz Haladu as the Executive Chairman with 98%, Kassim Halilu Muhammad as Managing Director with 1% and Sani Maina as Executive Director with 1%.
