A diamond tool is a cutting tool with diamond grains attached to the functional parts of the tool through a bonding material or other method. Because diamond is a super-hard material, diamond tools have many advantages compared to tools made with common abrasives like corundum and silicon carbide.
In Natural History, Plinio wrote: "When an adamas is successfully broken, it disintegrates into splinters so small that they are hardly seen, much sought after by engravers of precious stones and inserted in iron tools because they make holes in the hardest materials without difficulty".
Advantages of Diamond Coated Cutting Tools
Diamond is the best known material. It provides a standard against which other materials are compared. As such, it is the longest wearing surface of any material. Diamond's extremely high thermal conductivity eliminates heat from the cutting edge also helps prolong life.
The diamond lining process allows us to take advantage of diamond properties in complex shapes such as cut diamond cutters, drills and threads at a reasonable cost.
Our diamond-coated end mills last 12 to 20 times longer than bare tungsten carbide tools when machining graphite. Experience in other materials such as green ceramics and machining compounds show multiple life of bare carbide as high as 70 times!
