Criteria for a fully sustainable stabiliser system
A fully sustainable stabiliser system is a stabiliser, which could fulfil the four TNS System
Conditions that is presented in Table 1. These four system conditions define the conditions
that must be met in a fully sustainable future. Table 1 below describes the four conditions
together with some criteria that a fully sustainable stabiliser system may need to fulfil. It
should be emphasised that to fully meet all of the system conditions is rather hypothetical but
through this process we can prioritise those breaches of the system conditions that could be
tackled in the short, medium and long term. In addition some of the measures shown here
may seem extreme but these are taken from the perspective of full sustainability so elements
such as becoming carbon neutral may seem at first sight to be excessive steps to take in
relation to other priorities but nevertheless are included for completeness.
Conclusions
Advantages and disadvantages can be found for both the OBS and the Ca/Zn stabiliser systems
when looking into the systems from a sustainability point of view. The disadvantages presented
in table 8 are the main challenges in the future when developing them into fully sustainable
stabiliser systems.
Table 4 gives a summary of the main advantages and disadvantages of the OBS and the Ca/Zn
stabiliser systems. This summary has been prepared by ranking the breaches (Table 2 and Table
3) for the two stabiliser systems.
