History
Bharti Airtel Ltd (Bharti) was incorporated in 1995 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Bharti Telecom Ltd. In 1999, the company had a 63.4% equity interest in SC Cellular Holdings, effectively securing a 32.3% equity interest in Bharti Mobile (formerly JT Mobiles).
In 2000, Bharti acquired Bharti Telenet.
Operations
Bharti’s business is structured in three SBUs: mobile services, broadband & telephone services (B&T) and enterprise services. It offers GSM mobile services in 23 telecom circles in India. B&T services include broadband and telephone services offered in 90 cities to 860,000 subscribers. The enterprise services group operates through sub-units of carriers (long distance services) and services to corporates. All these services are provided under the Airtel brand. Mobile Services contributed 67% of gross revenues and B&T services, long distance services, and enterprise services accounted for 13.1%, 13%.
As per audited results for the nine months ended Dec 31, 2005, the company recorded an income of Rs 80 bn and a net profit of Rs 15 bn as compared with an income of Rs 788.1 mn and a net profit of Rs 11.3 mn in the corresponding period previous year.
