Introduction As part of the curriculum, and for the partial fulfillment of the requirements for obtaining the B.Tech degree from IIT Kharagpur, I, Subhrajit Bhattacharya, underwent industrial training at L & T Limited HED. Powai works for 8 weeks during the two-month period May-June 2005.
L & T Limited., Powai Works, located in Powai, a place in Mumbai, is a vast industry with wide variety of disciplines. The primary engineering divisions that this industry possesses are HED, E & C, ECC and EBG. Among them, HED (Heavy Engineering Division) is a manufacturing unit. In L & T Powai, HED has mainly three Strategic Business Units (SBUs), namely FPEX, CGPP and RCOG. FPEX, FP3 was the department in which I was registered for industrial training. This department deals with the design and manufacture of waste heat boilers. These equipments have a great application and demand in chemical industries, fertilizer plants, oil refineries etc. The designs of these equipment are carried out in multiple stages involving detailed calculations and complex analyzes to provide maximum safety. But care must also be taken to avoid excess design, which will otherwise increase material and manufacturing costs, as well as the weight of equipment, making transportation difficult and costly. Therefore, the HED of Powai Works has a huge department that deals with the design of the equipment, in addition to the gigantic workshops where the equipment is produced.
Under the direction of Mr. N.R.Raykar, Senior Manager, HED, I had the opportunity to have exposure to the work done in this department of the industry, and therefore learn a lot from them. During the two-month period of industrial training, the works assigned mainly focused on finite element analysis and related topics. The following is a brief discussion of assigned tasks and training during this period.
