NON TRADITIONAL MACHINING
Engineering industries harder and high strength alloy materials are use .
Considering this problem non traditional machining are used
Electrical discharge machining
Electric discharge machining (EDM), is a manufacturing process where by a desired shape is obtained using electrical discharges (sparks).
One of the electrodes is called the tool-electrode or simply the ‘tool’ or ‘electrode’ ; while the other is called the work piece-electrode or ‘work piece’.
WIRE EDM
This process is similar to contour cutting with a band saw.
a slow moving wire travels along a prescribed path, cutting the work piece with discharge sparks.
wire is made of brass, copper or tungsten. (above 0.25mm in diameter).
MACHINE
Wire EDM’s are manufactured in various sizes and styles of flush or submerged type machines to fit the needs of the consumer.
In addition to the X-Y table travels, wire EDM’s have U / V travels for providing the movement to cut tapers.
Most machines can cut tapers of 20-30 degrees depending on work piece thickness.
WIRE
Wire diameters range from 0.25mm to 1.0 mm with
0.3 mm being the most commonly used.
Needs for various wires include:
for maximum cutting speeds (coated wire),
cutting large tapers(soft brass),
cutting thick work pieces (high tensile strength wire).
APPLICATIONS
Drilling of micro holes.
Taper cutting.
Complex profile cutting.
Parting.
Dowel holes.
