The adjustable wheel opener is a special tool made to open / close all the nuts of a wheel in one go with less effort. Although several methods are used to open the nuts, they require a lot of effort to open a single nut. The main objective of the work is to develop a single tool with multiple mechanisms, which can be used during the assembly and dismantling of wheels in automobiles. It can be used successfully as a standard tool regardless of the vehicle model. It can also be used in assembly line of cars, garages, workshops and service stations.
In general bevel gears are used to transmit power between parallel non-intersecting axes. Therefore, the bevel gear arrangement is used to drive the four socket wrenches at a time. Twelve driven gears and a pinion are used. The cam and follower mechanism is used to make the project adjustable. For this purpose a radial cam is used because the follower moves in the direction perpendicular to the axis of the cam. And the spherical face follower is used because the lateral thrust and wear is considerably low. The pinion gear is meshed with four auxiliary gears which in turn are connected to a gear whose shaft contains the plug pins at its end. The auxiliary gear is connected to a hollow shaft (main shaft) which acts as a guide for the follower. The other end of the follower is connected to a bevel gear. A safety nut arrangement is provided to connect the main shaft to the follower in any desired position. When the pinion is turned, the auxiliary gears are also rotated which, in turn, give a rotating movement to the socket wrench. This helps tighten or loosen the screws. The adjustment to remove the bolts having different pitch circle diameter is achieved by turning the cam. The followers are in contact with the cam when the cam is turned, the follower will move linearly. After reaching a desired position, the follower is locked with the hollow shaft to rotate them as a single axis. The cam is then put back in its initial position to prevent the cam from getting severely worn while the follower is rotating.
