A solar energy satellite (SPS) is a renewable energy system that converts solar energy into electricity in space and transmits it to the Earth using microwaves. The SPS concept, first proposed in 1968 in the United States, has recently begun to attract greater public attention as a promising energy system that can be used to solve global environmental and energy problems. One of the most challenging technologies for SPS is the transmission of microwave energy from the geostationary orbit to the ground. Technologies for the transmission of energy by microwaves have been studied for more than 40 years since the first demonstrations in the sixties; however, for the application of SPS, considerable research is still needed, especially on the conversion of high efficiency energy between DC and RF and on long-term high-precision microwave beam control.
The Solar Energy System (SPS) is a renewable and infinite energy system in the geostationary earth orbit, which functions as an electric power plant in space. Four main parts of microwave power transmission (MPT) for solar space panel, a microwave generator (for high power application magnesium can be used and for low power application we can use solid state amplifier), an antenna to transmit microwave power, and a rectena to receive and convert microwave power into DC usable power. With increases in the cost of energy and recent interest in finding ways to produce energy with reduced emissions of greenhouse gases, SPS can play a vital role. The final concentration of this research work is to introduce the solar energy power system with the multi-junction solar cell which enhances the overall efficiency of solar space panel and the modern technologies associated with MPT for the SPS system proposed.
