WHAT IS A SOLAR CAR?
Car which converts solar energy into electricity to provide motive power.
Cars depend on PV cells for the energy conversion process.
POTENTIAL OF SOLAR CARS
Main concern with solar cars currently , is the cost incurred
However , the addition of an electric drive component improves the vehicle’s fuel economy.
Given this shift , opportunity arises for electricity yo be generated from PV cells.
The market potential for green buildings and equipment is expected to touch 40 billion$ by 2012.
Mechanical engineering component
The frame is deigned to be as minimal as possible.
The body needs to provide a large surface area and needs to be aerodynamic .
Solar cars are built using military grade carbon fibre donated by aircraft carriers such as Boeing.
The body is designed using CAD software.
Programming component
In order for the driver to know how the battery or array is operating, then a mini-computer (microcontroller) has to read in signals from sensors and display them on a screen in the cockpit.
The microcontroller and a software package called LabVIEW are essential to the success of the solar car.
LabVIEW basically creates a testing environment for battery management system (BMS).
Electronics engineering component
Photovoltaic cells have a complex relationship between their operating environment and the maximum power they can produce.
For any given set of operational conditions, cells have a single operating point where the values of the current (I) and Voltage (V) of the cell result in a maximum power output.
