A simple three-dimensional contactless measurement system (3D) was proposed which consisted of a 1D laser displacement sensor and a servo control coordinate system. The laser sensor was installed on the Z axis perpendicular to the X-table, Y-holding. A filter was designed to eliminate the noise of the measured data. A characteristic point extraction technique was proposed to capture the edge data points of the measured objects. Next, the Hough transformation technique of image processing was used to calculate the position and dimension of the edge of the objects measured on the basis of the extracted characteristic points. Experimental results show that this simple structure can effectively measure the position and dimension of 3D objects with reasonable accuracy.
