Flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) and power flow control devices are of international interest today. Despite the growing applications of FACTS devices, there are some factors that have been limiting the widespread application of this technology, highlighting the following: a) lack of a clear understanding of device options and configurations and their suitability for (b) lack of information on systematic approaches to the economic evaluation of FACTS projects for public services and transmission entities, and © lack of information on the analysis and comparisons of short-term and long-term alternatives to public services versus transmission reinforcements. There has been a significant body of literature on the technical analysis of FACTS devices, but little attention has been paid to the evaluation of the economics of FACTS options. This paper presents the results of an application study conducted for a major utility in the United States in the evaluation of the technique as well as the economic / commercial viability of FACTS for improved transmission.
