Network Segments
No exact definition, usually an area of a LAN, or LAN
More the devices which are added to the network, more the traffic – more chances of collision.
Dividing network into segments allows the majority of traffic to stay remain local
Collision Domains
Collisions occur when two or more devices transmit at the same time.
This causes the electrical charge of the signal to increase – a collision
All devices in the same collision domain cease transmitting for a random amount of time – to ensure they do not attempt to start transmitting at the same time again
Network Interface Card
NIC is an expansion card used to connect a PC, server, or workstation to a LAN
NIC provides an interface between the network and the PC’s bus
Most NICs are designed for a particular type of network, protocol, and media
The NIC segments outgoing messages into packet
formats specified by the LAN protocol for transmission
What is a Repeater
Repeaters are low-level devices that amplify or regenerate weak signals
Repeaters are needed to provide current to drive long cables
Repeaters are used to join network segments together to increase the total length of the network
Act at the physical layer and allow all traffic to cross LAN
