ELECTRICITY – A GREAT BOON
A century or so ago, humans discovered a wonderful new energy called electricity.
Since then, electricity has become such an important part of our lives that we wouldn’t want to live without it.
However, electricity from fossil fuels comes with a big environmental price tag.
GREEN POWER
So, we need environmentally friendly sources
of power and energy.
It should also be renewable and non-polluting too.
The answer is GREEN POWER.
Green power is energy from renewable resources .
SOURCES OF GREEN POWER
Hydro power
Biomass
Wind power
Geothermal power
Solar power
Hydro power
Hydropower is considered a renewable energy resource.
Hydropower facilities intercept the water as it flows down rivers and streams, converting its mechanical energy into electricity.
This water is channeled through several power stations by enormous pipes, some taller than a double-decker bus.
Inside the power station, the flowing water spins giant turbines like waterwheels, and this spin is then used to produce electricity.
BIOMASS
Biomass is the term used to describe the generation of energy from organically based sources.
The energy stored in plants or animals can be captured for energy generation by several different methods such as decomposition, combustion or gasification.
Current GreenPower biomass generators include landfill gas, sewage gas and bagasse (sugar cane waste).
Sugar cane residue can be used as a biofuel
Wind power
Just like the heat of the Sun, the power of wind can also be changed into electricity using giant windmills called turbines .
Large blades are attached to the shaft of an efficient electric generator. By using the momentum of moving air they create power.
Wind power is the fastest growing of the renewable energy and produces no greenhouse gases during operation, such as carbon dioxide and methane.
How it works
Solar Cells (really called "photovoltaic" or "photoelectric" cells) that convert light directly into electricity.
Solar water heating, where heat from the Sun is used to heat water in glass panels on your roof.
POWER STORAGE
Power storage can improve the efficiency and reliability of the electric utility system by reducing the requirements making better use of efficient base load generation, and allowing greater use of intermittent renewable energy technologies.
Energy storage technologies include utility battery storage, flywheel storage, superconducting magnetic energy storage, compressed air energy storage, pumped hydropower, and super capacitors. Additionally, hydrogen may be used as an energy storage medium.
New green IT technologies promise energy efficient storage without sacrificing performance.
CONCLUSION
For a clean and good environment, it is now imperative to explore ways of adopting technology that keeps nature at its pristine best thereby saving the human population from the dire effects of pollution caused by our deeds only.
All out effort is needed to achieve green power saver. This includes sharing of experiences of major manufacturers of equipments, engineering consultants, academicians, environmentalists and leading utilities in the world in the area of eco-friendly power generation, water resources development.
