HVDC and FACTS systems use electronic power converters for power conversion and power quality control. High-power thyristors have been serving as the key component in HVDC and FACTS converters for several decades and are still being developed for greater power today. This article describes thyristor technology and its development in application in HVDC and FACTS. The fundamental characteristics and characteristics of high power thyristors are discussed with particular reference to their application in high voltage and high current area. Many thyristors connected in series along with specially designed mechanical and electronic auxiliary systems build the so-called thyristor valves, which form the HVDC and FACTS converters. A general description of the thyristor valve design is provided. In addition, the latest development in thyristor and thyristor valve technology and its application in ultra-high voltage (800 kV) DC application is introduced. A summary of the key technical parameters and design characteristics of the 6 "thyristor valves including the design date of the valve for the first UHVDC application is provided.
