Introduction To 4G Wireless Networks
Fourth generation is the “next generation of technology” that will be used by cellular phone companies, making it possible to deliver superior quality video and data, in addition to voice. 4G wireless was originally conceived of by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the US, the same organization that developed the wired internet.
Reasons to Have 4G:
Support interactive multimedia services: teleconferencing, wireless Internet, etc.
Wider bandwidths, higher bit rates.
Global mobility and service portability.
Low cost.
Scalability of mobile networks.
What's New in 4G:
Entirely packet-switched networks.
All network elements are digital.
Higher bandwidths to provide multimedia services at lower cost (up to 100Mbps).
Tight network security.
Generations of Wireless Communications
The generations of wireless communication are of having the following
1G – Original Analog Cellular systems.
e.g. AMPS
2G – Use of digital signaling techniques.
e.g. Widely used GSM.
2.5G – Predominantly Voice driven. Data was always an add on. Limited data rates up to 28 Kb/s.
e.g. GPRS.
3G – Voice and data transmission with rates up to 2 Mb/s
like streaming video clips possible.
e.g. UMTS
4G- Movies and TV transmission with rates up to 100Mb/s
e.g. cell phones
