INTRODUCTION
A plan for a railway system in India was first put forward in 1832, but no further steps were taken for more than a decade. In 1844, the Governor-General of India Lord Hardinge allowed private entrepreneurs to set up a rail system in India. Railways were first introduced to India in 1853. By 1947, the year of India's independence, there were forty-two rail systems. In 1951 the systems were nationalized as one unit, becoming one of the largest networks in the world. IR operates both long distance and suburban rail systems on a multi-gauge network of broad, meter and narrow gauges. It also owns locomotive and coach production facilities. The first train in India became operational on 1851-12-22, and was used for the hauling of construction material in Roorkee. A few years later, on 1853-04-16, the first passenger train between Bori Bunder, Bombay and Thana covering a distance of 34 km (21 miles) was inaugurated, formally heralding the birth of railways in India.
This project aims at development of an Online Railway Reservation Utility which facilitates the Railway customers to manage their reservations online, and the Railway administrators to modify the backend databases in a User-Friendly manner. The Customers are required to register on the server for getting access to the database and query result retrieval. Upon registration, each user has an account which is essentially the ‘view level’ for the customer. The account contains comprehensive information of the user entered during registration and permits the customer to get access to his past reservations, enquire about travel fare and availability of seats, make afresh reservations, update his account details, etc.
NEED OF THE PROJECT
Today one cannot afford to rely on the fallible human beings who really wants to stand against today’s merciless competition where not to wise saying “to err is human” no longer valid, it’s outdated. So, to keep pace with time, to bring about the best result without malfunctioning and greater efficiency so to replace the unending heaps of flies with a much sophisticated hard disk of the computer. One has to use the data management software. Software has been an ascent in atomizing various organizations. Now only this software has to be loaded on the computer and work can be done. This prevents a lot of time and money. The work becomes fully automated and any information regarding the organization can be obtained by clicking the button. Moreover, now it’s an age of computers and automating such an organization gives the better look.
SURVEY OF THE PROJECT
Data management initially had to maintain a lot of ledgers and a lot of paper work has to be done but now software product for this organization has made their work faster and easier. Now only this software has to be loaded on the computer and work can be done. This prevents a lot of time and money. The work becomes fully automated and any information regarding the organization can be obtained by clicking the button. Moreover, now it’s an age of computers and automating such an organization gives the better look.
The main objective of railway reservation project is to maintain the records of train details so that it could be easy for updating the reservation details. The train details consisting of train name, train no, destination to be reached, number of passengers traveling and number of seats available. The reservation details consist of passengers, name, age, sex, destination to be reached by them, ticket numbers, and seat number.
FUNCTIONALITIES
The process of railway reservation system consists of many functions. The Passengers and Railway Administrators are the two parties which interact with the database, who have different ‘view level schemas’ to the database information.
The functions of Passengers are checking ticket availability, reserving tickets, cancelling tickets, checking train schedules etc. The functionalities of Administrators include updating train databases, generating reports, maintaining passengers list etc. The administrator is provided with facilities like deleting the passenger list etc.
The functionalities can be best elaborated as follows:
• REGISTRATION: New users are provided with registration form for registering themselves with the existing system for utilizing the services provided by Indian Railways.
