Abstract
In this era of emerging Information Technology there is a lot of emphasis on developing hi-tech devices with upgraded technologies that will ease almost every task. But these emerging technologies have significant impact on environment. So there is a great need to review the ICT strategies in order to make them eco-friendly. For using ICT judiciously there is a great need of stable and honest legal system which will incorporate and implement certain laws that strive for a change.
INTRODUCTION
Use of ICT for development is not a novel idea. There have been a lot of coordinated global efforts for deploying ICT for improving the public services. Since the computer and technology have started influencing the society, the healthcare is standing at the threshold of world of possibilities, thrown up the technologies like cyber surgery, micro-robotic surgery and 3D image modeling. In education sector, the technology has changed the way teaching and learning used to be done in schools .The intervention of technology into the classroom helps the student to understand the complex concepts easily. As far as banking sector is concerned the ICT supports withdrawal of money using ATM machines and online banking to check accounts at anytime and anywhere.
E-WASTE SCENARIO IN INDIA
The growth of e-waste has significant economic and social impacts. The increase of electrical and electronic products, consumption rates and higher obsolescence rate leads to higher generation of e-waste. The higher obsolescence rate of electronic products also adds to the huge import of used electronic products. The e-waste inventory based on this obsolescence rate in India was estimated to be 1, 46,180 tonnes in 2005 which is exceeded to 8, 00,000 tonnes in 2012.
CONCLUSION
ICT is clearly very advantageous for humans and helps us to accomplish many activities more effectively and efficiently. ICT if used without consideration of environment can result in devastating consequences to the very natural system that supports life on this wonderful planet. In the fast growing global demand for ICT, the only better solution is to adopt Green Computing practices in our daily digital lives that will contribute to the minimization of environmental damages and overcome the IT related risks.
