Balaji Wafers and the Namkeen group, based in Rajkot, Gujarat, India, manufactures and distributes potato dishes and other grain-shaped snacks in various flavors. It started as a micro enterprise which has become a Rs 4000 crore company of quality products with an indigenous flavor.
When Chandubhai Virani and his brothers Bhikhubhai, Kanubhai and Meghjibhai emigrated from a small village in the district of Jamnagar to Rajkot. His father Popatbhai Virani was a farmer, who sold the land of ancestral agriculture and gave Rs. 20,000 to them to venture into business. Viranis invested money given by his father in the agricultural equipment business, but he could not succeed and lost the money. Chandubhai Virani and his brothers started the wafer business from a canteen of a movie theater in Rajkot in 1974. Until 1989, wafers were produced in the house of the Viranis and were distributed in and around the city of Rajkot.
Overwhelmingly successful retailers were inspired to fix a semi-automatic plant instead of preparing the wafers by the traditional method of frying. This semi-automatic plant boosted quality, flavor and increased sales. The unique fame of taste gradually came to every part of Gujarat, and now it was time to take over the entire west of India, so that the largest automatic plant in Gujarat came into the picture.
In the initial stage, Balaji Group had installed its plant in Aji Vasad (Industrial Zone, Rajkot) with its new concept of manufacture of French fries. The main benefit they get is the availability of readymade infrastructure because their cost greatly reduced. They operated there for about 22 years.
The key elements behind Balaji's phenomenal success are the strong core values of the Virani brothers, which mainly include "Trust, Passion and Steady Hard Work!"
Balaji Group, then set up its new fully automatic plant near Metoda G.I.D.C. which is located in the village area called Vajdi, outside the town of Valsad.
Balaji Group had a tremendous growth in the Chips sector in the decade 2007-2016, surpassing the marks of the main actors like Lays', Kurkure, Parle and Bingo.
The company is targeting a similar market in the frozen food and fry sector dominated by McCain Foods by launching a new production line under the Iscon-Balaji Foods brand.
