Abstracts: Hydraulic muscle is an integral part of industries carrying out heavy manufacturing work. Use of hydraulic components in different hydraulic circuits includes components like pumps, intensifiers, accumulators, filters, valves, actuators etc. The careful selection, installation, maintenance and operation of these components is essential to continuous running of production. The quality of hydraulic fluid or oil is a governing factor in the performance of any hydraulic circuit. Contamination levels in the hydraulic fluid govern the maintenance frequency and life of the components. In this project work, the problem of hydraulic fluid contamination in hydraulic pump of concrete block making machine causing repeated failures and maintenance of pump in Columbia Pakona Engineering Pvt. Ltd., Vadodara is studied. Enklo 68 HP hydraulic oil is used for operating the movement of machine parts. ISO codes are used for defining the cleanliness level of oil. Various alternatives are studied for solving this problem. Different hydraulic pumps are studied from the point of view of changing the type of pump so as to install a pump which can handle the contaminated fluid. The associated costs are compared with the alternative of an offline filtration system and a third alternative of changing the filter in the system. The change in filter in the system is found to be the best alternative on the basis of break even analysis. The level of contaminants is reduced and ultimately failure of the pump can be avoided.
