A FEW IMPORTANT TERMS OF FASHION
1. Apparel: All embracing articles, that is, outfit/ ensemble and accessories form apparel.
2. Accessories: All articles worn to complement or enhance the outfit ranging from ties to shoes, bags, belts, ornaments, watches, hats, gloves, stocking etc.
3. Applique: Emblems, cut fabric shapes, figures or motifs that are superimposed and sewn or fused to garment components.
4. Brand: A trade name or symbol that distinguishes a product as that of a particular manufacturer or company.
5. Boutique: In French it means ‘little shop’. It is a free standing shop or an area within a retail shop devoted to a specialized customer for their special interest.
6. Consumer: The ultimate user of goods or services.
7. Craze: A FAD or a fashion characterized by much crowded excitement or emotions.
8. Croquis: A draped sketch of a design through which a garment is developed.
9. Conceptual wear: An outfit that presents the concept of the theme in terms of material and key elements. May be made of non- clothing material and impractical for mainstream fashion.
10. Design details: It includes styles of necklines, collar, sleeves, fastenings and trims designs.
11. Embellishment: Any ornamentation done on the surface of fabric in order to enhance its appearance, texture etc.
12. Embroidery: An art form that uses closed or overlapping stitches to form intricate, 3- dimensional surface designs to embellish piece goods, trims or garments.
13. Fashion show: Formal presentation of a designer’s collection through a ramp and models.
14. Fashion Leaders: In a group of people, few are much more conscious and aware of the trends and adapt it faster than others. Such people are the first and foremost to accept and popularize a style and are then followed by others.
15. Fashion Followers: Those who follow the Fashion leaders, that is, the first ones to adapt the latest trend, are known as fashion followers in a group of people.
16. Haute Couture: The French word ‘Couture’ means ‘sewing or needle work’. Haute Couture is high quality fashion design and construction.
17. High Fashion: The term is commonly used to describe a very new and expensive style who’s acceptance is limited to those who want to be first to adopt the very and new fashion and can afford the astronomical prices.
18. Line: A collection of designs shown by a producer to the client in a given style.
19. Mass Fashion: A trend or style being accepted and worn by the masses or the common people.
20. Pret-a-porter (Ready to wear): Clothes which carry a designer’s label but which can be brought ready-made off the peg. They are produced in standard sizes and in bulk.
