Factor effecting of fashion
It is easier to recognize what is fashionable at a given time, but it is difficult to say how or why it becomes a fashion.
There are several factors which make a particular dress or style a fashion.Asthetic appeal alone is not responsible for making a style a fashion.
Fashion is what the customers what, designers fashion producers and retailers alone with their promotional effort cannot dictate what fashion is. These factor influencing fashion of particular times are discussed below.
Psychological factors:
Man, by nature, is a lover of change. The inherent tendency to look for novelty compel man to experiment new ideas which may sometimes results in the establishment of new social setup.
Change in attitude of society towards family planning, caste system, women's education etc.
Changes come about for psychological reasons. People often gets bored with what they have. They also get tired of same colors, lines and textures.
Sociological factor:
A classic example of a social change that brought about a drastic change in fashion occurred in the early decades of 20th century, when women sought, gained and enjoyed new political and economic freedom.
Their altered activities encouraged them to discard constricting garments that had been in fashion for centuries, and to adopt shorter skirts, relaxed waistlines, bobbed hair and other fashions more appropriate to their more active lives.
Generations later, as women moved into executive positions in the business world, the tailored suits and attaché bags become the ‘dressing for success’ fashion among career women.
Fashions are a language that communicate self – physical fitness movement brought about a hiking, tennis, aerobic dancing mushroomed, so did the need for new and different fashion appropriate to each of these active sports, rise.
Technological factors:
Technological advancement has resulted in the production of surplus food, population growth, industrialization.
All these have affected family size, occupational divisions, gender roles, interdependency, social competition etc.
Environmental factors:
Geological and climatic phenomena like earthquakes, flood, and tornado, tsunami etc.
Variation in the availability of water resources and mineral resources (e.g. Petroleum) can also affect social change.
Cultural factors
The main cause of social change is the cultural factor.
The basic elements of culture like language, religion, philosophy, literature, faith and values will take long time to change due to the influence of another culture.
The co-existence of two different cultures for a long period can cause cultural diffusion leading to changes in both. India, for example, discarded age long customs like Sati and Child marriage because of her contact with the Europeans.
