What is Virtual Prototyping?
Virtual prototyping is a technique in the process of product development. It involves using CAD and CAM software to validate a design before committing to make a physical prototype.
Concept
The concept behind virtual prototyping is to reduce time to market and optimize products to higher levels of performance and reliability.
Much higher number of products are being developed in the form of virtual prototypes in which simulation softwares are used to predict performance prior to constructing physical prototypes.
Why do we make prototypes?

Sell the product before it exists.
Sell it internally to the marketing dept, sales dept, Investors, etc.
Sell it to customers to get advanced interest.
Explain product features and issues.
Communicate assembly issues.
Communicate how the product operates, etc.
Comparison
Virtual prototyping
Virtual prototyping don’t use the additive constructions as the means of creating solid prototype objects.
Virtual prototyping is always a “dry” process.
Rapid prototyping
Rapid prototyping makes use of additive constructions as the means of creating solid prototype objects.
Rapid prototyping can either be a “dry” or “wet” process.
Applications
Virtual prototyping have an important role in:-
Developments of complex aerospace products
Hazard identification
Optimization of fuzzy based active suspension
system
Advantages
Due to the use of Virtual Prototyping technology in the modern world, several things get easier such as-
Time to market is reduced
Marketing of a product becomes easier
Loss can be predicted before construction of physical prototypes
