INTRODUCTION
A combined reaction engine in which the cycles of an air-breathing jet engine and a rocket engine take place.
It may be used in astronautics for space shuttles.
The term is sometimes used to denote an engine in which the oxidizer is atmospheric air liquefied in flight.
This hypothetical type of engine has been proposed for prolonged flight in the upper atmosphere.
How do air-breathing rocket engines work?
An air-breathing rocket engine is quite similar in operation to a jet engine. Air is sucked in from the atmosphere by a compressor. The engine then compresses the air. Next, the engine mixes the air with fuel and burns it -- providing thrust. As the vehicle shoots through the atmosphere, this air is compressed. In the case of air-breathing rockets, liquid hydrogen or hydrocarbon fuel would be the fuels used.
Conventional rocket engine
