INTRODUCTION
The chapter begins with the description of a night when Mr.Jones, the manor of the farm has just locked in the animals for the night but in his drunken state, does not remember to shut the pop-holes. AfterMr. Jones and his wife are asleep, theanimals; dogs, pigs, the hens, sheep, cows, horses, pigeonsand rats assemble in the barn to listen to what the Old Major had to say, word had got out during the day that he had a strange dream on the previous night and wanted to share it with the other animals. And even though it was late, the animals did not mind losing an hour of sleep for the important news that the Old Major had to deliver.
The Old Major began by telling the animals that he would probably not be around them for too long and hence he felt, it was his duty to pass on his wisdom to the rest of the animals. He reminds them about all the work that they have to do for the humans, how they are barely given enough to eat and how they own nothing but their bare skin. He describes how the humans steal everything produced by the animals, with the animals receiving in return only enough food to keep them from dying. He tells them that their children are taken from them almost as soon as they are born, and that when the humans have extracted as much from them as they possibly can, they will be heartlessly slaughtered.
He goes on to tell them that all the animals are brothers and that their only real enemy is humans. Man is the root cause of all their troubles.
Old Major finally gets around to telling them about his dream, but the first thing he tells them is that he cannot describe the dream, except to say that it reminded him of a song that he learned in his youth called “Beasts of England.” He sings the song, which tells of the day when Man is finally overthrown and when the animals are finally free. The animals in the barn respond to this by singing it together. Until they are interrupted by a blast from the farmer’s shotgun. The farm quickly returns to normalcy.
