The Vision
Sime Darby Properties is an established property group and one of the leading property developers in Malaysia with a mission of Making A Sustainable Future Real for Everyone.
Sime Darby Bhd has adopted the term ‘Strategy for Sustainability’ which has been accepted as the theme and best summary of the group’s corporate strategy.
As described by Nik Meriam Nik Sulaiman, a University of Malaya professor “Sustainability science is an emerging field of research dealing with the interactions between natural and social systems, and with how those interactions affect the challenge of sustainability ... and conserving the planet’s life support systems”. She added saying “(Sustainability) encompasses the full scope of relationships with supply networks, customers and stakeholders and support service providers for providing business solutions and also handling wastes, residuals and impacts, which science has a role to play in developing sustainable processes,” Nik Meriam noted that the desire for corporations to grow without further damaging the environment had become more central to business philosophies.
Project Objectives and Strategy
The objectives of this project are:
• To help rebuild Rwanda’s infrastructure
• To help develop Rwanda’s housing sector
• To create a better housing experience for the Rwanda people
• To implement Sime Darby’s sustainable designs for ultra-low-cost tropical housing
• To use materials that are at best, less harmful to the environment
We aim to achieve the above by working closely with the Rwandan government and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). In January 2007, Rwanda was selected as one of eight pilot countries for One UN Reform to enable the UN system to provide a more effective and coherent response to the needs of the Government of Rwanda and its Development Partners (4). By working closely with UNDP, we can create a strategic alliance that not only outlasts this project but will act as a support to Sime Darby’s mandate of sustainable development.
Potential Barriers and Plan
Given the fact that this will be out first outing to Rwanda, we anticipate facing cultural barriers as we attempt engaging indigenes. The fact that resentment has existed between the country’s two major ethnicities- Tutsi and Hutu indicates the care one needs to given in managing all local stakeholders directly or indirectly involved.
Sime Darby holds an exclusive contract with Monjabe Holdings ltd for East Africa. Thus we’re constrained to source all our materials from this partner.
Due to our cost-reduction policy, we’re constrained to assign not more than 10 staff from Sime Darby to this project.
