Introduction
Tourism is a service industry has a vast growth potential, which has been reflected since1950‟s. It has significant important in the development strategies of developedas well as developing countries. The potential of tourism is not only limiting to the Travel and visit places. It is also a mode ofgenerating income for the people who are involved in it. Tourism and Livelihood is a recent emerging concept in the Tourism industry. Livelihood means “supporting one's existence, by financially or vocationally”. Tourism can greatly contribute to the Livelihood of the community through the activity involved in it.
Kerala has many art forms, which attract visitors. Pulikali is one of the oldest art form of Kerala. It is usually performed during Onam Festival of Kerala. It provides an amazing visual treat for the audience. Pulikali is a tourism attraction and it has high potential to contribute to Kerala Tourism.
Importance of the study
Unemployment is one of the major problems facing by Kerala. And conservation of Pulikali is another issue. To perform Pulikali, there is to need the skills of some people like performers and artisans. There for the promotion and conservation of Pulikali through Tourism will be beneficial to livelihood of people who involved it.
Objective
The specific objectives of the present study are given below:
1) To prepare Socio-Economic background of Performers & Artisans
2) To examine the present scenario of Pulikali with special reference to Kerala Tourism
3) To suggest strategies for promoting & conserving Pulikali through Tourism in Thrissur district
Study area
The study focuses on Pulikali in Thrissur district, one of the festival art form of Kerala. It is usually performed during the Onam festival of Kerala. The basic area of study is that livelihood of people who involve in it through the conservation and promotion of Pulikali.
