INTRODUCTION
Bionics = Biology + Electronics
Bionics implies biological electronics and denotes an effort to use biological design principles to create novel technological devices and to create mechanical substitutes for biological organs.
A less common and may be more apt meaning of term “Bionics” refers to merging of Man and machine.
Evolution of Bionics
The evolution of Biological Engineering, spanning over a period of at least four millennia, shows that it is descended from various disciplines that originate from three ancient pillars of knowledge, that are practices of engineering, medicine and the discipline of philosophy.
Reason for growing interest in bionics is the fabrication methods are much more sophisticated and highly beneficial .
As the performance gap between biological structures and our mechanical analogs shortened , engineers felt more encouraged to seek and adapt design concepts from nature and fabricate them to meet their salient features.
Bionic Arm
Many people , in their life time loose their arms ,legs in accidents , diseases or in war .For such people the bionic arms and legs offer new hopes.
Rehabilation centres in USA are successful in making prototype bionic arms which run on rechargeable batteries.
The working of bionic arm is similar to a normal arm.
Bionic Arm and working
Motor nerves are responsible for the movements of human limbs. They stimulate the muscle expansion and contraction that results in limb movement .
Tiny electrodes implanted in the chest muscles receive nerve impulses from remnants of motor nerves there & carry signals to the microprocessor.
With the combination of micro processor and motors, arm motion is possible.
Bionic Arm
The motor nerve impulses are results of thinking of particular arm motion by human brain.
Variation in contraction strength determines the variation in arm movements .
The degree of freedom for a Bionic arm is 7/10.
More ease comes with practice of brain activity.
EXOSKELETON SPECS
Works on interconnected hydraulics and computing system.
The processor tracks the motion of human limbs and moves the suit according to it.
It helps soldiers in lifting heavy weights , heavy weapons for longer durations tirelessly.
The programming of the suit is complicated and it should be perfect.
Conclusion
Research is still underway to overcome these disadvantages and successfully unite man and machine. Scientists are hopeful that these artificial body parts are available through out the world for a low price by 2015.Then the odd man can finally overcome the defects of being handicapped . Lets hope that this happens in a near future.
