Introduction
Ballarpur Industries Limited (BILT), part of the US$ 3 bnAvantha Group, is the undisputed leader of the Indian paper industry. It is India's largest manufacturer and exporter of paper, with a strong presence in all segments of the usage spectrum, including writing and printing (W&P) paper, industrial paper and specialty paper. Complementing this is a diversified production infrastructure with six manufacturing units spread across the country.
In recent years, BILT has evolved as a dynamic, knowledge-driven organization focused towards creation of stakeholder value. In the process, it has also transformed the paper industry from its traditional 'commodity market' mindset to a branded one. A concerted program of innovation and technological excellence helps it proactively respond to the needs of each individual segment. Today, BILT not only has the range, but also a well-entrenched distribution network that enables it to reach customers, any time, any place.
As the industry leader, BILT is committed to developing its business towards ecological, social and economic sustainability. Community development and upliftment of the marginalized sections have been identified as focus areas. BILT offers vocational training and programs on micro financing for the unemployed. The company works extensively with the communities on a broad range of issues, including health, education and strengthening of the village panchayat system through training of members on issues relating to governance, development, and fund management. BILT, in collaboration with its partner NGOs, has helped established Self Help Groups (SHGs) at the village level to implement its social programmes. It has also joined hands with Pratham, an NGO that runs primary education programmes all over the country. A key initiative in environmental accountability is the BILT farm forestry programme, which has, to date, brought 32,000 hectares under plantation, benefitting nearly 37,000 farmers.
Ballarpur Industries Limited (BILT) produces superior varieties of paper and paperboard mainly coated papers. The main raw material for the paper manufacturing is bleached pulp imported from Indonesia, Canada and other pulp surplus countries. BILT had been granted clearance from Maharashtra State Pollution Control Board and Ministry of Environment and Forest, New Delhi for manufacture of superior varieties of coated paper and paperboard – for a capacity of 2 lakh ton per annum based on imported bleached pulp. The irrigation authority has also permitted drawing of water from backwater of Ujjani Dam @ 7.57 million cubic meter per annum. MSEB had sanctioned connected load of 40 MW. In conformity with the stated policy of Government of India and the State Government BILT has set up state-of-Art paper mill along with most modern utilities such as 30 MW coal based power plant, water treatment plant and 5 stage effluent treatment plant to manufacture paper and paper board including coated varieties. It is termed as most eco-friendly owing to its use of bought out bleached pulp with no pulp manufacturing facilities at the unit.
Company History
LalaKaram Chand Thapar established company in 1945 as Ballarpur Paper and Straw Board Mills Limited, with 'Three Aces' (paper) and 'Wisdom' (stationery) being its first two brands. In 1969 Shree Gopal Paper Mills Limited in Yamunanagar was merged with the company. In 1975, the organisation was renamed Ballarpur Industries Limited.
In the 1990s the company was under siege from Southeast Asian companies, who set up Greenfield projects in India. But in 2001, Ballarpur Industries turned around and was able to buy out its Indonesian competitor's Sinar Mas Group Indian division.
The name BILT emerged after a corporate rebranding exercise in 2002. Today, it is a well-established name, associated with not just paper, but also stationery products.
Organization Structure
"BILT continuously strives to attain high levels of accountability, transparency, responsibility and fairness in all aspects of its operations".
It remains committed towards protection and enhancement of overall long-term value for all its stakeholders - shareholders, investors, customers, lenders and employees. BILT continues to pursue this objective through the adoption of competitive corporate strategies, prudent business plans and systematic monitoring of risks, while at the same time, creating checks and balances and an organisation structure that values people, propriety, equity and fair play.
HR policies of the Organization
Talent management continues to be an important focus area for the business and the HR function adequately supports the need for operational effectiveness and excellence. Employer branding and talent attraction are significant for talent acquisition. There are two factors that enhance the talent acquisition challenge for BILT. First, most of BILT’s operations are in remote locations where most people do not prefer to settle. Second, there is a scarcity of quality talent in the paper industry, which makes it even more difficult to fill technical positions. The Company’s recruitment strategy addresses these concerns through multiple source points and partnering with relevant search and recruitment consultants for lateral recruitment. The entry level talent is drawn from reputed Engineering and Management Schools by adopting competitive compensation, appropriate orientation, mentoring and adequate training before placement in jobs.
Talent development is accomplished through training and development, career planning, job rotations, deputations and other such endeavors. The training focus of the Company is very systematic and addresses all aspects across technical, managerial and general management areas. The focus is to build competencies that specifically address the needs of the business. The training program has a blend of both personal and professional skill development and is executed by partnering with relevant trainers and training institutions, with an objective to improve managerial effectiveness, enhance the overall development of employees and build the talent pool for future leadership positions.
