Chemical composition, antioxidant activity and inhibitory potential of Eucalyptus citridora growing in J&K
ABSTRACT
Fresh leaves of Eucalyptus citredora was subjected to hydrolization for the extraction of essential oils. The essential oil was analyzed by Gas chromatography/Mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were Isopulegol (51.11%), Beta-Citronellal (29.15%), L-Isopulegol (11.5%) and citronellyl acetate (5.77%) which were found to be main components. Antibacterial activity of the essential oil was assayed by agar well diffusion method against eight bacterial strains. Maximum inhibitory activity (inhibition zone dm >10mm) was observed against Enterococcus .faecalis, Pseudomonas alcaligenes, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Antifungal activity of the essential oil was evaluated by poisoned food technique against two agricultural important fungal pathogen viz. Alternaria alternata and Curvularia lunata and IC50 was determined as 0.16% and 0.51% against Alternaria alternata and Curvularia lunata respectively. The antioxidant activity of E.citridora essential oil was evaluated by DPPH radical scavenging method and metal ion chelating assay. An average radical scavenging activity was observed (IC50 690 µg/ml) whereas significant chelation activity (39%) was observed at the concentration of 0.5 mg/ml.
