Problem Statement
To design and manufacture key-rings using Plastic Injection Molding and analyse it for:
Determining the “Critical Working Parameter” using Taguchi method.
Determining the feasibility of the process – Cost of Production
Objective
The primary objective of this project is to “Design” the mold for the selected product – “Key Ring”, “Manufacture” it using “Plastic Injection Molding” method and to optimize the process using “Taguchi’s Loss function” so as to determine the “Optimum” solution for the problems.
To analyze the process capability of the plastic injection molding using certain software made for this specific purpose. (Used by L&T Plastic Machinery LTD,)
To check the economy of the production, considering the product is in batch production.
Future Prospects
The future prospects of the project are
One will be able to replace the Trial and Error method by Taguchi Method, resulting in better Optimality.
One would be able to easily sort out the critical parameters priority – wise (According to the percentage of their effect on process).
One will be able to understand the concept of measuring the process capability using the software (Source: L&T Plastic Machinery LTD., Chennai)
Methodology
Design Considerations: Once the model is ready, the mold is manufactured keeping the following design consideration in thoughts.
Feeding/Gating System Design
Sprue/Runner Design
Parting Line Concept
Ejection System
Figure 5 represents the various design consideration parameters while designing a mold.
Manufacturing: Once the mold is ready, it is taken to the production zone and the desired parts is produced using it.
Analysis: Taguchi Method is then used to analyze the optimal conditions, which provides a new experimental strategy in which a modified and standardized form of design of experiment (DOE) is used.
This technique helps to study effect of many factors (variables) on the desired quality characteristic most economically. By studying the effect of individual factors on the results, the best factor combination can be determined. Taguchi designs experiments using specially constructed tables known as “orthogonal array” (OA).
Company Profile
Overview:
L&T started manufacturing injection molding machines in 1990 with the introduction of the "D series" of advanced injection molding machines in a joint venture with Mannesmann Demag Kunstofftechnik, the erstwhile Demag Plastics Group.
In March 31, 2009, L&T acquired the equity formerly owned by Demag to form L&T Plastics Machinery Limited.
L&T Plastics is acknowledged as the leading injection molding solutions provider in India.
Its facilities in and around Chennai incorporate some of the most advanced systems for design and research, hydraulics and mechanical construction.
Production capacities exceed 1000 machines every year in clamping forces from 400kN to 13000kN.
