Abstracts: Unlike the Tesla Coil, which produces a continuous barrage of loud, writhing sparks, the Van de Graaff Generator quietly builds up a d.c. charge on its metal sphere, or collector, over several seconds. The charge can then be drawn to an electrode in the form of a lightning-like spark or used in a variety of experiments.
