Why water splitting?
Nearly 90 percent of energy supplied from fossil fuel.
High energy demand- decreasing fossil fuel supply.
Negative environmental impact.
Alternative energy source – hydrogen production.
Present methods- inefficient or require fossil fuels.
For example- steam reforming- produces hydrogen from natural gas.
Water Splitting Techniques
Method of separating chemically bonded elements & compound by passing electric current through them.
Electric current being passed through the water.
Electricity consumed is valuable than hydrogen produced, so generally not used.
High temperature electrolysis- efficiency doubles – considered in combination with nuclear heat source
Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting
Use electricity produced by photovoltaic systems or photoelectrochemical cell(PEC) process.
Cleanest way to produce hydrogen.
The system is also named artificial photosynthesis.
Photobiological Water Splitting
Biological hydrogen can be produced
in an algae bioreactor.
if the algae are deprived of sulfur it will
switch from the production of oxygen to
the production of hydrogen.
