Introduction
Engineering projects involving development of river valley water resource developments have been found to be causing certain adverse & negative impacts on our surrounding environment, which has forced it to make it compulsory to evaluate these adverse impacts in details , well before the project is cleared for execution. With this end in view, all project clearance cells do evaluate and examine the detailed environmental assessment report, which is prepared and submitted along with detailed project report of every such project. Submission of such EIA and EIS’s have been made compulsory by GOI for all projects, which are likely to cause harm to our surrounding environment. This statements are thoroughly examined by concerned ministries before giving EC to the project, without which , administrative & financial sanction to the project will not be given.
All such impact assessments should thoroughly examine and discuss the various possible environmental damages, whether pertaining to air pollution , water pollution, noise pollution, ground pollution or any other kind of environmental pollution and their suggested remedial measures to prevent or to mitigate such hazardous environmental effects.
The environmental impacts which are likely to be caused by the river development projects are discussed in this report.
Environmental Assessment is a method used to identify the main impacts a project
or activity may have on the environment. The negative and positive consequences
of development projects are assessed to provide decision-makers with a holistic
and informed opinion based on sound and objective research and analysis.
Adverse impacts on fisheries
Adverse impacts may be caused to the fisheries, as the fish is not likely to find the original rapid flow and sea water environment in the river downstream, and the dam will also check and prevent the free up and down movements of fish in the river, Fish may also perish while passing through the turbines or through the sluiceways along with the water released downstream for power generation and other uses.
Conclusions
In totality, it can be stated that the multipurpose water resource projects, do not by themselves, cause any environmental degradation and do generally justify their nature of being in environmental harmony. They also provide benefits and prosperity, and make available food and power, so very necessary for the development of the country. However, it is the haphazard and unplanned development and industrialization, encouraged by the execution of such water-resource projects, which cause all round environmental degradation, and this must be checked.
We must, therefore, make attempts to stop and prevent such unplanned growths of human and industrial developments, rather than stopping and preventing the execution of water-resource projects, which are the backbone of existence and prosperity of the nation, and that of the entire community as whole.
