EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This community lab tries to trace out the socio-economic and demographic features of the rural economy by taking Bajrer as a sample village. A sample of 10 households was selected for this study and information was collected by using a baseline interview schedule.
The baseline information of the sample households shows that majority of the households belong to OBC category. Major source of irrigation of this village is kuhl. Rice and wheat are the two major crops. Farm mechanization is very less. Infrastructural facilities are very poor. Awareness levels of farmers regarding scientific crop cultivation are poor. The transport facilities are inadequate.
Regarding the status of the socio-economic profile of the households, Agriculture is the main occupation and (50%) of population primarily depends on Agriculture for their livelihood. The average size of land holding came out to be 1.2bigha.There exist a number of social issues out of which the notable are increase in dowry, unemployment, drudgery for women, poor health of children, strong opposition to the inter-caste marriage etc. Majority of the farmers belong to the category of marginal farmers.
INTRODUCTION
A Community lab was conducted by the Central University of Himachal Pradesh for the study of the Demographic and Ethnology of the nearby community. A field survey was conducted by the students with an efficient set of questionnaires which pertains the following contents i.e. a brief family introduction, demography of the family with land inventory, farm buildings and implements, cropping pattern, input & labour use, consumer durables, consumption of cereals, borrowing and repayment, problem and sources of information, rural development programmed, reading habits, information on social issues, environment, health, women empowerment, education, information on entrepreneur.
The survey was conducted by keeping in view about the problem of eradicating poverty from the Indian villages especially in context to Himachal Pradesh, in this survey an observation of a number of household in the village Bajrer of Prei Panchayat of district Kangra. In order to ensure the effectiveness and adequacy of the designed questionnaire forms, pilot survey also conducted. The main objectives of conducting these pilot surveys is to fine tune them to attain their objectives most effectively.
Concluding Remarks:
Total population of the selected households was 46 out of which male constituted 26 (57.82%) and females constituted 20 (42.18%).Regarding the educational level only 15.92% of the studied households were illiterate. Majority of the population (67%) depends on government job for their livelihood followed by private sector (13%). Majority of the households (30.48%) are earning an income of more than one lakh from both the main and subsidiary occupations. The main proportion of the income is spent on food items and education. Expenditure on health was very low. In the surveyed village, social welfare and rural development schemes are running like MGNREGA. Regarding the extension services most of the farmers are getting information from Agricultural development officers. The main constraints faced by the farmers in agriculture are lack of timely availability of fertilizers (28%) and monkey menace (28%) which appeared to be a major problem in the village for the destruction of crops. There are various social problems prevailing in the village like dowry, huge opposition to inter caste marriages etc.
